Background: An abortive bank raid in Turkey ended in violence on Friday (23 May) when one man was shot dead and another was seriously injured. Heavily armed police and troops arrived during the robbery in the southern city of Izmir and a gun battle unused.

SYNOPSIS: The attempted raid took place at midday in the most crowded area of Izmir at the TV Ziraat Bank. Security forces were summoned when the bank manager set off an alarm bell.

Banks are favourite targets of terrorists in Turkey, where ore than 2,000 people have died in the past 15 months in political violence. Martial law has been declared in 20 of the country's 67 provinces, and military guards have been placed on many banks. But they've failed to stop the robberies. Even the presence of soldiers and armoured cars in main city streets has yet to deter the terrorists.

On this occasion, a customer was shot dead by the raiders inside the bank and one of the robbers was wounded in the crossfire. He was taken to an ambulance, and a second raider surrendered to police.

Police had to manhandle people in the crowd who tried to attack the injured robber before he could be taken to hospital. Elsewhere in Turkey, on the same day, more than ten incidents of political violence were reported. An average of 10 people are killed by terrorists every day. And there's no sign of an end to the problem.
