Background: Pakistan's top economic decision making body met in Islamabad on June 15th and approved the draft of the Fifth Five Year Plan which took stock of the nation's economy since the present government took over in July 1977.

SYNOPSIS: The Fifth Five-year Plan will cover the period from July 1st, 1977 to June 30th 1982. Pakistan's last five year plan formulated in 1970 was replaced in 1972, as a result of economic and political changes, and a series of annual plans have been in operation since then. Their main objectives included development of agriculture and basic industries, improvement in transport and communications systems, removal of power shortages and development of backward regions on a bigger scale. Pakistan's top economic advisers met on Thursday (June 15) to draft the latest plan.

General Iqbal and the team of planners have introduced a strategy aimed at rejuvenating rural life and satisfying the basic human needs of the growing population of Pakistan.
