Background: On November 20, 1967, high in the mountains of North Vietnam, an U.S. Air Force RF-4C "Phantom" reconnaissance aircraft was shot down by enemy ground fire and the two crewmembers were forced to parachute from the falling plane.

Detachment 1, 37th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron quickly dispatched an HH-3E, "Jolly Green Giant" helicopter to the scene of the incident.

Once over the area, the jungle penetrator was lowered to pick up Captain John Giminero, the co-pilot on the mission. He was brought on board the helicopter and assisted the rescue crew in spotting the pilot of the downed "Phantom", Lieutenant Colonel John Scholtz.

When the parachute of the flyer was spotted, the jungle penetrator was again lowered to bring him to the safety of the "Jolly Green Giant."
Neither of the two rescued officers was injured in their parachuting into the jungle.

Both men were returned to their unit, the 432nd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing at Udorn Thai Air Force Base, Thailand.

Lieutenant Colonel W. A. Britton was the rescue crew commander of the helicopter Major M. L. Wells was co-pilot, Staff Sergeant V. Androwsky was the helicopter mechanic on the flight, and the para-rescue jumper was Sergeant J. M. Duffy.
