Background: David Rockefeller, Jr., Chairman of the "salute to Chaplin" gala to be held on Tuesday, April 4th 1972, in Philharmonic Hall at Lincoln Centre, today announced the formation of the Honorary Committee for this historic event (list of names attached). Said Mr. Rockefeller, "These distinguished citizens in the arts and in national and communal affairs are those who have responded as of this morning. The complete list will be announced shortly." Mr Rockefeller wont on to say, "The response to, and enthusiasm for the coming event has been overwhelming. It is clear that the evening of April 4th will be a memorable one."
Martin E. Segal, President of the Film Society of Lincoln Centre, Inc., announced that invitations to the gala are now being mailed. Reservations will be filled in the order of receipt at the Film Society. "Tickets can be purchased." Mr. Segal said, "in various categories; honorary benefactors for the event will pay $1,000 and for this will be entitled to four tickets for the film showing in Philharmonic Hall and the champagne gala which will follow Patrons' tickets will be $100 each and will include the film showing and the gala. Tickets at $25.00 and $10.00 each will entitle the holders to the film showing."
Mr. Rockefeller said that the program at Philharmonic Hall will consist of a showing of Charlie Chap in's great comedy short, "The Idle Class", followed by an on-stage appearance by Mr. Chaplin and then the showing of Mr. Chaplin's famous film, "The Kid", for which Mr. Chaplin recently completed a musical score. Mr. Rockefeller said that april 4th will be the first occasion on which the film with the new musical score will be presented publicly. After Mr. chaplin's remarks form the stage of Philharmonic Hall and the film showing, the champagne gala will be held. Mr. and Mrs. Chaplin and other members of their family will be present for this portion of the evening's festivities as well.
A special banner will fly in front of Philharmonic Hall the evening of April 4th with "Hello, Charlie" emblazoned across it.
Mr. Segal said that arrangements completed with Mr. Chaplin and his representatives in London on February 7th indicated that Mr. Chaplin will be available for only one press conference in New York. That will be held the day before the gala -- the afternoon of April 3rd.
The Film Society of Lincoln Centre (1865 Broadway, New York City 10023) is the principal sponsor for the April 4th event. Co-sponsors are Lincoln Centre for the Preforming Arts, City Centre of Music and Drama, and the Museum of Modern Art.
