Background: In the United States President-elect Jimmy Carter and President Gerald Ford had different ideas about how to spend Christmas.
SYNOPSIS: Mr. Carter's mother - Miss Lillian as she is called locally - is resting in hospital with a minor ailment, and the Carter family went to see her. Mr. Carter returned with a sack full of gifts. His daughter Amy received a doll's house with furniture which will soon be installed in the White House when Mr. Carter takes over the Presidency at the end of January.
Later the Carters had Christmas lunch at Mrs. Carte's mother's house. Mr. Carter had thought this would be his last Christmas without newsmen but he wished a "Merry Christmas" to those who waited outside.
Hundreds of miles north-west of plains, President Ford was spending his usual sporting Christmas with his family in Vail, Colorado. The previous night the family went to midnight mass in a Roman Catholic Church where they sang hymns and heard the priest pray for snow. It did not snow but the President went to the slopes anyway - there was enough snow left from the fall the day before.
Senator John Glenn, who 14 years ago became the firs United States astronaut to make an orbital space flight was with the President - as well as the ever present security men.
