Background: Government troops and Khmer republic militia men consolidated their positions on Monday and Tuesday (13, 14 August) in and around the Khmer capital, Phnom Penh. They were preparing for an expected heavy communist attack seen after Wednesday's (15 August) cessation of all United States bombing support for the government side.
Meanwhile, American servicemen around a key base for the bombing raids, Utapao, were making last minute purchases of souven??? if the bombing halt continues and no further planes are needed to pr??? reconnaissance aircraft (which will continue to fly), many pilots wil??? pulled out of the Republic.
As the Khmer government forces dug in for the expected battle, they encountered relatively light resistance from Khmer Rough troops. Heavy last-minute bombing was said to have hampered the movement of Communist troops up around the beleaguered capital -- new all but cut off from the majority of its countryside.
The Cambodian high command reported that government troops had almost stopped the steady infiltration of the capital by rebel forces -- particularly in the Takhmau area, an industrial suburb. But the discovery of a huge arms cache in the capital, with modern weapons and ammunition as well as rockets and small arms, added to fears that infiltrators were in hiding in the city, waiting for the bombing halt to attack the defences from within.
