Background: Jordan's Prime Minister, Zeid Al Rifai, briefed Syria's President Hafez Al Assad on King Hussein's recent talks in the U.S.A., Britain and France during an unexpected visit to Syria on Monday (19 May).
Mr. Rifai spent four hours with President Assad in the Syrian capital of Damascus.
A statement broadcast by the State-controlled Damascus Radio said the situation in the Middle East had been discussed and President Assad was briefed on King Hussein's talks in London, Washington and Paris.
While in the U.S., King Hussein said his country, Egypt and Syria were ready, and even eager to make peace with Israel after years of refusing to recognise the Jewish state. But he also said a new war in the Middle East could break out unless Israel made some gestures towards peace in the area.
