Background: In Paris, refuse collectors yesterday (18 December) used their trucks to block streets leading to the elysee Palace, home of the French President.

SYNOPSIS: The drivers staged their protest to support a wage and early retirement claim. In a carefully planned operation, some 200 refuse trucks were swung across roads leading to the palace. Only people on foot could make their way through the barricade. The action was the climax to two previous days in which the refuse collectors created major Paris traffic jams by driving their trucks in slow convoys through the city.

the inevitable result of this latest action was yet more traffic jams. Though, at one point, the refuse collectors allowed an ambulance through, they refused to budge for the furious motorists. An official from the Ministry of the Interior later met a driver's deputation. The Ministry is expected to reply to the driver's demands today (19 December).
