Background: Arthur Ashe scored a remarkable 6-1, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 victory over defending champion Jimmy Connors in the-American Wimbledon's men's singles tennis final in the London on saturday (5 July).
So firm a favourite was Connors, that speculation before the match centred on how many games he could loss rather than the chances of his retaining the title.
But the sixth seeded Ashe, who is thirty-two in a week's time, played a brilliant tactical to complete destroy his 22-year-old opponent.
His dominance of the first two sets was so great that Connors won only 12 points in the first and 18 in the second.
Ashe's victory made him the first black male ever to win the low courts following a libel action filed by connors over a letter Ashe recently wrote to American davis cup players.
