Background: Among most English-speaking societies a 'stag nigh' is a figure of speech given tot the usually bawdy, drunken bachelor revelry that takes place ont he eve of a man's wedding day. But to the Deerstalkers Association of New South Wales, Australia, stag night has a different meaning. It's their annual dinner and deer-calling contest -- in which the members make very realistic deer mating-calls at each other. The calls, used in hunting to attract stags towards the hunter so that they may be shot and killed, are judged for realism at the annual dinner -- and the contestants participate under appropriate nicknames like 'Bugling' Beresford Smith, 'Potshot Padre' and "Roaring' Ron Jansen.
The highlight of the annual stag nights, following a venison dinner and the individual competitions for the most realistic mating call, is a 'knockout' contest in which the two best single performers roar at each other until one is exhausted and drops out.
