Background: The Shah of Iran and Turkish President Cevdet Sunay cut a ceremonial ribbon in the Eastern Turkish town of Van on Monday to formally open the first railway link between the two countries.

The new 270 km (170 mile) link, built under a Central Treaty Organisation (CENTO) project at a cost of some 70 million dollars (30 million Sterling), will provide the first train service from London through Europe to Teheran.

The CENTO project also calls for a further expansion of the Iranian railway system to the Pakistan border, to join up rail communications through the four CENTO member countries, Turkey, Iran, U.K., and Pakistan.

At lake Van, in eastern Turkey where the opening ceremony took place, trains will be transported by two specially-built ferries 91 kms (56 miles) along the lake, to avoid rugged mountains.
