Background: PRESIDENT JOHNSON FLEW TO SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA, YESTERDAY (MONDAY) ON THE LAST STAGE OF HIS FAR EAST TOUR. HE WAS GREETED AT THE AIRPORT BY PRESIDENT CHUNG HEE PARK AND PRIME MINISTER CHUN IL KWAN.

THOUSANDS OF KOREANS WAVED FLAGS OF BOTH COUNTIES AS THE PRESIDENT AND MRS. JOHNSON STEPPED OUT OF THE JET AND A GUN SALUTE BOOMED OUT.

THEN THE PRESIDENT DROVE AROUND A GUARD OF HONOUR BEFORE LEADING A MOTORCASE ON THE THREE-MILE DRIVE (5 KMS) INTO THE CITY.

THE ROAD FROM THE AIRPORT WAS PACKED WITH TENS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE AS THE PRESIDENT DROVE PAST. LATER THEIR NUMBER HAD SWOLLEN TO AN ESTIMATED ONE MILLION -- SEEMINGLY EQUALLING IN NUMBER THOSE WHO GAVE THEN PRESIDENT EISENHOWER A TUMULTUOUS WELCOMED DURING HIS VISIT IN 1960.

IN A SPEECH, PRESIDENT JOHNSON SAID MAN'S ULTIMATE GOALS LAY BEYOND THE BATTLEFIELD. "THEY WILL BE REALISED," HE SAID, "WHEN THE RESOURCES OF MANKIND ARE DEVOTED ENTIRELY TO RELIEVING HUNGER, TO CONQUERING DISEASE AND TO BE LIBERATING MAN'S SPIRIT AS WELL AS HIS BODY."
THE PRESIDENT ALSO PAID TRIBUTE TO SOUTH KOREA FOR WHAT HE CALLED ITS "HONOURABLE AND VITAL ROLE IN THE PACIFIC COMMUNITY."
