Background: The Polish championships in four-in-hand horse-drawn carriages have been held in Starogard Gdanski. Even teams of four horses from ten studs took part.
SYNOPSIS: The most spectacular event in the competition is the proficiency contest. Each team of horses has to cross the track of obstacles mounted on grass in less than 201 seconds. Seventeen obstacles, some only a few centimetres wider than the carriages itself, call for great driving skills.
Many of Poland's leading horsemen were competing.
Here the carriage and four attempt to move through one of the narrowest obstacles on the course. It's a close thing. All obstacles successfully cleared are points towards a possible winning tally.
The driver of this four, Zygmunt Waliszewski, is the European vice-champion in this spot. He's won events in France, West Germany, Holland and great Britain. His team of grey's was bought ten years ago, and his cross-carriage was built only two years ago by whelright, harness-maker and blacksmith from Starogard Gdanski. With the least number of penalty points he won this contest.
