Background: Prime Minister Fidel Castro of Cuba recently led a campaign to encourage Cubans to give blood for victims of last week's earthquake in Peru.
Thousands of donors queued for hours in centres in Havana and throughout the island. The blood will be sent to Peru as part of the massive international rescue operation which is now underway.
The Cuban Government is also sending food, clothing and other medical supplies to Lima for distribution by Peruvian authorities.
Nearly a million homeless and injured including a hundred thousand children are waiting for relief supplies.
