Background: Sir de Villiers Graaff, leader of the United Party, arrived on the Rand today for a series of meetings in the Transvaal. He faces a position different from a few weeks ago when he opened the party's campaign in the Transvaal.
Firstly, the Nationalist Party has been hard at it beating the tribal drum and appealing to Afrikaners to vote Nationalist because it is the Afrikaners Party-- the only party which can save him from extinction as a nation.
Sir de Villiers, himself an Afrikaner of farming stock, is an position to deal effectively with this nationalist slogan particularly before the predominantly Afrikaans audience he will be addressing at Roodeport, at Sitbank and at Westonaria.
Since the arrival of Sir de Villiers, the Nationalist Party has also raised the cry of "do not vote for personal interests but for big issues."
His visit is of particular significance in the election campaign because his meetings and personal contacts will cover a series of marginal constituencies where, in the words of a United Party organizer, "anything can happen."
