Background: Four people were killed and another four injured when an avalance smash through the small fishing village of Patreksfjordur, in north-western Iceland on January 22. Houses, cars and a bridge were destroyed. The avalance was one of about ten which occurred in Iceland that weekend, but it was the only one to cause so much damage. The meteorological office had warned that avalanches were imminent because of a combination of rising temperatures and heavy rainfall. But there had not been a severe avalanche in Patreksfjordur in living memory and the inhabitants did not feel threatened. The last serious avalanche in Iceland was in 1975 when 11 people were killed in another small fishing village.
