Background: A Bristol freighter taxies in for the start of an air-lift to King Island farms in the Bass Stratt. The Bristol is prepared at MELBOURNE airport for the first of ten flights to be made to the island. The cargo has been brought by road in an all-night journey from Coolamon in New South Wales. And ready to take the air is a consignment of sheep.....

The sheep, of first Border Leicester Cross, are being sent to King Island to help build up flocks on soldier settlements there. The airlift was planned to spread over two days: 140 sheep were to be accommodated in each flight. In all, 1,500 sheep were being flown from the mainland.
