Background: THE FAMOUS "MONA LISA" WENT ON PUBLIC DISPLAY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE UNITED STATES ON WEDNESDAY WITH HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF AMERICANS EXPECTED TO VIEW THE MASTERPIECE DURING THE COMING WEEKS.

THE PUBLIC EXHIBITION OF LEONARDO DA VINCI'S MASTERPIECE ON LOAN FROM THE LOUVRE, FOLLOWED AN UNVEILING CEREMONY ON TUESDAY NIGHT ATTENDED BY PRESIDENT AND MRS KENNEDY AND A GATHERING OF GUEST DRAWN FROM THE RANKS OF GOVERNMENT, THE ARTS AND THE DIPLOMATIC CORPS.

STANDING BESIDE THE MONA LISA, PRESIDENT KENNEDY EXPRESSED THE NATION'S THANKS TO FRANCE - "THE LEADING ARTISTIC POWER IN THE OLD WORLD".

MRS KENNEDY DESCRIBED PRESIDENT DE GAULLE AS MAN WITH A VISION WHO HAD "SEIZED THE OPPORTUNITY FOR A REBIRTH OF FRANCE AND HAS GIVEN THE WORLD RENAISSANCE A NEW MEANING FOR OUR AGE".

FILM TAKEN AT THE CEREMONY WAS TRANSMITTED TO WESTERN EUROPE BY THE NEW U.S.RELAY COMMUNICATIONS SATELLITE.

THE MONA LISA WILL REMAIN ON PUBLIC DISPLAY AT THE NATIONAL GALLERY FOR NEARLY A MONTH BEFORE GOING TO NEW YORK FOR EXHIBITION AT THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART.
