TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 2: ADESUYI: "The spread of cholera is now at our doorsteps. it is essential that all state ministries abroad, and all stations, should be property briefed at this conference as to all particular steps to be taken to stem the tide of cholera in the face of introduction into this country. Cholera was introduced, as you all know, into West Africa in August this year via the Republic of Guinea. From Guinea, the disease has spread progressively eastwards along the West Coast to Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, and Togo. The clear message of the medical evidence is that Nigeria must be prepared. We all realise that this message must be taken very seriously. As wee shall see later, as we continue this conference, it is well established that proper sanitation and effective medical surveillance constitute the only reliable insurance against the spread of cholera. Vaccination is of limited value and there is therefore no place for total vaccination of the entire population in cholera control. Groups, however, should be vaccinated, including such groups as medical staff, personnel at ports, airports and border posts, those engaged in refuse and street disposal, and have contact with the population."
