Background: In the International amateur boxing tournament between the national teams of the Federal German Republic and the U.S.S.R., held at the Moscow Palace of Sport Nov 25, the Russian boxers defeated the West Germans by eight bouts to two.
Outstanding bout of the tournaments was between flyweights Manfred Homberg (West Germany), European Amateur Flyweight Champion on 1957, and Vladimir Stolnikov (USSR), four times champion of the U.S.S.R.
The German's superior ringcraft and agility overwhelmed Stolnikov, and Homberg was finally declared the winner on points.
Another bout, between Olympic Middleweight Champion Gennady Shatkov (USSR) and Heinz Madai (West Germany), resulted in a win for Shatkov by a technical knockout in the first minute of the second round.
This tournament was the third between the two nations.
