Background: Ten people were injured in Beirut on Monday (15 March) when a bomb ripped through the French Cultural Centre in the city. The explosion broke windows and spread rubble over a wide area. Several fire engines rushed to the scene, where nearby cars had caught alight. The attacks on French and Franco-Egyptian targets are said to be a consequence of opposition to French President Francois Mitterand's recent visit to Israel to discuss a peace plan in the Middle East. Last September the French Ambassador, Louis de la Mare, was murdered in Beirut.
