  • Description

SCU Official announcing the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in English, French and Swedish.

Isaac Bashevis Singer says that he is currently working on what he calls his spiritual autobiography, which he says will be ninety percent autobiography and ten percent fiction. "You know that an autobiography that is completely true is rare" he says, "It is not in the power of the human being to tell the whole truth. Human life is so rich, so full of contradictions that you cannot tell everything".

Background: The Nobel prize for Literature has been awarded to Jewish author Isaac Bashevis Singer. The announcement was made by the Swedish Academy in Stockholm on Thursday (5 October) and the citation said Singer was being honoured "for his impassioned narrative art which, with its roots in Polich-Jewish cultural traditions, brings universal human conditions to life".

SYNOPSIS: Singers was chosen in competition with other famous nominees like Simone de Beauvoir of France, Graham Greene of Britain, Nadezhda Mandelstram of the Soviet Union and Jorge Luis Borges of Argentina. Aged Seventy-four and now living in Miami in the United states, Singer has written most of his works in Yiddish and spent his early life in the Warsaw ghetto. This provided him with the raw material for his short stories, novellas and major novels, which are set against the backdrop of Cossack pogroms, poverty and the ritual of Jewish family life. Singer began his writing as a journalist in the Polish capital, but emigrated to the United States in 1935. When told if the award he said "I write, but I don't write for prizes. What writer does?" -- adding -- "I am still a pessimist, Nobel Prize or not. A great percentage of human life is misery, when everything comes out alright it is an exception".
