Background: Despite the emergency in Thailand, elaborate and ancient rituals were observed when the body of Princess Kromluang Tipatarat, an aunt of the King, was taken in procession to the funeral pyre. While Bangkok was subjected to military patrols, the funeral progressed solemnly in Eastern splendour.

The King and Queen of Thailand led the mourners in the time-honoured rites, placing candles and flowers on the pyre. When tradition had been satisfied the pyre was lit.
