Background: Agricultural and financial experts from many African countries met in the Kenyatta Centre in Nairobi, Kenya, on Monday (6 September) for a conference to discuss policies and institutions for integrated rural development.
SYNOPSIS: The conference was arranged under the auspices of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, the Swedish International Development Authority, and the German Foundation for International Development. Last year two similar conferences were held in Colombo and Jakarta.
This meeting was one of three to be held this year in Africa and Latin America. The inaugural address was given by Mr. J.J.Nyagh, the Kenyan Minister of Agriculture. The purpose of the conferences is to create greater awareness and understanding of the principles of an integrated approach to agricultural development.
It is also hoped the meeting will promote the idea of national programmes for integrated rural development, and to provide a basis for continuing collaboration between developing countries and the Food and Agriculture Organisation.
