Background: President Kennedy and Prime Minister Khrushchev finished their first round of private summit talks at the U.S. Ambassador's Residence in Vienna shortly before 7 p.m. on June 3.
At 8 p.m., a dinner reception was given at Vienna's Schoenbrunn Palace by the Austrian President Dr. Schaerf in honour of President and Mrs. Kennedy, and Prime Minister and Mme Khrushchev.
This was the first time that the two ladies attended a public function together, although they were not seen speaking to each other.
As the two parties and Dr. Schaerf posed in a group for the press and then waited while the guests filed past them into the dining hall, an initial moment of slight embarrassment was soon overcome. Mr. Khrushchev talked to Mrs. Kennedy and Mr. Kennedy struck up a lively conversation with Mme Khrushchev, apparently without making much use of the accompanying interpreters. Later they listened to a musical programmed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
