  • Description

The problems of the Vietnamese refugees continue....but nearly 300 of the so-called "boat people" have found a new life this week (25 June). They are the 295 people rescued at sea in May by the freighter Roach Bank and now accepted on Britain.

SYNOPSIS: A British airliner was sent to Taiwan's southern port of Kaohsiung to pick up the Vietnamese and to fly them direct to London on Monday (25 June). The refugees had spent one month aboard the Roach Bank, anchored just outside Kaohsiung while the authorities negotiated their future.

After Britain announced it would take responsibility for the families, the Taiwanese authorities allowed the Roach Bank to enter port so the refugees could prepare for their flight. Before their rescue, the Vietnamese had endured an eleven-day ordeal at sea during which six people had died. It is the second time Britain has accepted Vietnamese refugees taken to Taiwan by a British ship. Last October the bulk-carrier Wellpark brought 346 boat people into the port.
