    Citizens of La Victoria, a poor district of Santiago, paid their last respects of French pries shot dead on September 4.Father Andre Jarlan's body was found slumped over a bible by another priest, Father Pierre Dubois, during civil disturbances which left nine people dead.Father Dubois said he had evidence that his colleague had been shot by the police, a claim denied by the government.Father Jarlan's coffin was carried through the streets thronged by thousands of people.Others waved from their balconies as the procession passed below.The body was carried eight kilometres (five miles) to Santiago's cathedral and was to be flown back to France.Fearing further ugly scenes, Archbishop Juan Francisco Fresno of Santiago appealed to his flock not to allow the situation to be exploited by those "who might try to spoil a sacred moment." President Augusto Pinochet said in a television statement that the killings during the unrest were the fault of protestors, who should be tried.Relations between the government and the Catholic church have been strained by the killing of Father Jarlan, and on September 6 the Archbishop of Concepcion cancelled a service to which government officials have usually been invited.
