Background: On Monday, November 2nd, Ethiopia celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the Coronation of the Lion of Judah, Emperor Haile Selassie. Thousands of people poured into Addis Ababa from all over Ethiopia for the celebrations, as well as hundreds of diplomatic and state representatives from all over the world.
The 78-year-old emperor drove to St. George Cathedral where he was met by Acting Patriarch Abuna Theophilos and given a Bible to kiss before entering the Cathedral for the Service of Thanksgiving.
Among the Ministers and official guests who heard the Emperor lead the prayers, was Crowd Prince Asfa Wossen.
After the Service, the crowds massed outside the Cathedral watched the departure of the officials--and the pomp and pageantry of the Emperor's drive from the Cathedral to Monument Square surrounded by a mounted Guard of Honour.
A Military Band played at the Square--where the Monument commemorates Ethiopia's victory over the Fascists in 1941. The State drive continued from there to the Parliament Buildings for a special joint session of Ministers. At the Parliament Buildings, the guests were individually greeted by the Emperor before adjourning to the Chamber for the Parliamentary Session.
Then, as bands played and crowds surged forward, Emperor Haile Selassie took the salute of the Armed Forces of the Country he has led for 54 years--12 as Regent to his aging Mother, Empress Zawditu, and 40 as King of Kings and Emperor in his own right.
