Background: FIFTY AUSTRALIAN POLICEMEN ARE ON PATROL 10-THOUSAND MILES FROM HOME--IN CYPRUS. THEY ARE PART OF THE UNITED NATIONS PEACE-KEEPING FORCE ON THE TROUBLED ISLAND.

THE AUSTRALIANS ARE FROM EVERY STATE AND FROM THE NORTHERN TERRITORY AND THE AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY. THE STATES PROVIDE POLICE FOR THE AUSTRALIAN CONTINGENT ON A POPULATION BASIS WITH 13 FROM NEW SOUTH WALES, 10 FROM VICTORIA AND FEWER FROM THE OTHER STATES.

ALL THE AUSTRALIANS ARE SWORN IN AS MEMBERS OF THE COMMONWEALTH POLICE FORCE.

SUPERINTENDENT K.J. CARTON OF VICTORIA IS THE COMMANDER OF THE PRESENT AUSTRALIAN CONTINGENT, AND HIS DEPUTIES ARE SUPERINTENDENT HOGAN FROM NEW SOUTH WALES AND SUPERINTENDENT LAWLOR FROM SOUTH AUSTRALIA.

THE AUSTRALIANS PATROL A LARGE AREA IN THE SOUTH-WEST OF CYPRUS. THEIR STATIONS, SPREAD ACROSS SOME 120 MILES OF THE ISLAND, ARE AT NICOSIA, AYIOS THEODHOROS, LIMASSOL, KTIMA, AND POLIS. AT LIMASSOL THE 17 AUSTRALIANS ARE QUARTERED IN WHAT WAS ONCE A PRIVATE HOSPITAL. IN SOME PLACES THEY LIVE IN HOTELS.

PATROLS ARE DONE IN CARS AND FOUR-WHEEL-DRIVE VEHICLES--THE FOUR-WHEEL-DRIVE VEHICLES ARE NECESSARY TO REACH SOME OF THE REMOTE HILLSIDE VILLAGES WHICH ARE NOT ACCESSIBLE BY CAR.

THE AUSTRALIANS SERVE 12 MONTHS IN CYPRUS. THIRTY-EIGHT OF THEM WILL FINISH THEIR TOUR OF DUTY IN MAY AND THE REMAINING TWELVE IN JUNE.
