Background: French National Assembly President Jacques Chaban-Delmas was yesterday (Saturday) said to have been name as Prime Minister in the proposed government of M. Georges Pompidou, currently running for President in today's (Sunday) final round of the Presidential elections. M. Chaban-Delmas, who is also the Mayor of Bordeaux, spent yesterday touring the city and greeting citizens.

Each weekend, M. Chaban-Delmas visits Bordeaux and yesterday, he visited a swimming pool being built in the city and construction site. The Mayor also toured Aquitaine Bridge and visited young people to a home for handicapped children.

    M. Chaban-Delmas spoke to reporters in his office in the Hotel de Ville and greeted Bordeaux citizens on the streets.

    M. Chaban-Delmas, who was in the Resistance and with the French Government-in-exile during the Second World War, has been President of the National Assembly since December, 1958. He has also been Minister of National Defence, Minister of State and Minister of Public Works, Transport and Tourism.

He was elected Mayor of Bordeaux for the first time in October, 1947 and has served since then in the post without interruption.

Mr. Chaban-Delmas holds a number of decorations, among them the Legion d'Honneur and the Croix de Guerre.

The public opinion polls have been giving M. Pompidou a commanding lead over his opponent, Centrist Alain Poher, who became Interim President after General de Gaulle's resignation on April 28. The latest poll, published yesterday, showed M. Pompidou taking 58 per cent of the votes-- three per cent more than General de Gaulle received in the 1965 Presidential run-off election with Socialist Francois Mitterrand.

    M. Maurice Couve de Murville is the current Prime Minister.
