Background: In a new wave of industrial unrest, coming Jese than two months after an earlier one, pilots of the domestic Trans Australian Airline and New South Wales jockeys, have come out on strike. New South Wales teachers and Post Office workers are also threatening action.
The pilots are officially locked out. This follows a one-day strike last week against an alleged unfair dismissal of a pilot who was in breach of safety regulations when he approached Wynyard airport in Tasmania at below the specified safety level. The pilots agreed to return to work but only with the proviso that one-day strikes would continue until the pilot was re-instated. The Government owned airline refused to accept the pilot back on this condition. The strike has been in progress since Friday (23 November) with no settlement yet in sight.
New South Wales jockeys came out on strike on the same day. The jockeys are demanding a cutback in the number of horses allowed to run in 1600 metre races where an artificial barrier is in use, they are also asking for an increase in their riding fee from $13 to $18 plus ten per cent of all prize money (as opposed to the present five per cent). There have been several racing accidents recently (see story ExVisnews Sydney 1/11) which have led the jockeys to demand greater safety measures. The jockeys and race officials are at present negotiating and unconfirmed reports suggest that racing could be resumed by the weekend.
