Background: The President of Sierra Leone, Doctor Siaka Stevens officially opened a new one million Leone (Two million Sterling) bridge on Tuesday (April 16). The new bridge will solve many of the traffic problems in Freetown. In a speech to mark the opening, Doctor Stevens paid tribute to the part played by the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Bank K.F.W. for their expertise and finance which made the bridge a reality. Doctor Stevens said the need for a bridge over Congo Cross was recognised by the All Peoples Congress even before they were mandated by the people in 1967. The bridge took four and a half years to build. The four lanes of traffic will relieve traffic congestion in the Congo Cross and Syke Street junctions of Freetown.
