    Background: There was a strict security guard mounted in Beirut, Lebanon, at the continuing trial of 16 officers and other ranks of the Army's Deuxieme (Intelligence) Bureau on Monday (March 12) when ten of the accused were remanded on bail. Officers were released on GBP 1,000 (sterling) each, and other ranks GBP 500 (sterling). One man was kept in custody, and the remaining five are being tried in their absence.

    The charge involve wasting state funds, destroying official documents, and interfering in civil affairs. Among those being tried in their absence in Colonel Gaby Lahoud, former head of the Bureau for ten years until 1970. He is reported to be in Spain.
