Background: Mr. Laurent Marti, the Red Cross representative in Israel, met officials of the Red Crescent of East Jerusalem and the major towns of the West Bank on Sunday to discuss ways to get medical aid to the wounded in the Jordan fighting.

The officials of the Red Crescent, the Muslim equivalent of the Red Cross, met under the chairmanship of Dr. Daoud Michaeli, the organisation's co-ordinator on the West Bank. The meeting passed a resolution appealing to the Jordan Government to permit medical aid into Jordan from the West Bank. It also asked the Israeli Red Cross to get the help through and to mobilise all available assistance.

As the Jordan authorities have closed the bridges across the river, Israel has given its Red Cross Permission to transport aid through Israel to Beirut, the Lebanese capital. From there it is hoped it can be flown to Amman by Red Cross planes.

Mr. Marti told the Red Crescent officials of the Israeli decision. He said he had asked the Red Cross headquarters in Geneva for a detailed list of aid and personnel required. When he gets it he will submit it to the Red Crescent representatives so they can organise the required assistance.

Although the Red Cross had made two mercy flights from Beirut to Amman by last night no major relief has yet been able to reach the town.

It is estimated that there have been up to 10,000 casualties so far in the fighting in Jordan.
