Background: Girls wearing mini-skirts can nw enter St. Peter's Basilica--thanks to long, black, hooded gowns provided by Vatican authorities. By donning the robes, ladies can evade offending the guards who turn away anyone--male or female--wearing garments which leave the legs exposed above the knee.

Thousands of tourists, including men wearing shorts, have been refused entrance to the historic shrine over the last few years by the unwritten but inflexible law of the bare thigh. But now, bending a little under public pressure, the Vatican hierarchy has made available the long gowns.

The garments, which resemble nuns' habits, come free-although notices in six languages invite a donation from visitors who make use of the new service.

Last summer a nun was asked to assist the overtaxed male guards of St. Peter's in keeping watch on the doors, but she retired from duty shortly afterwards with nervous exhaustion.
