Background: President Eisenhower of the USA, accompanied by Mrs. Eisenhower, switched on the lights of America's national Christmas tree in the President's Park, Washington, USA, Dec 23. The lighting in the highlight of the annual Christmas Pageant of Peace.
The Pageant was inaugurated in 194 to help foster understanding and friendship between America and other nations. Many states in the Union and foreign embassies placed a Christmas tree, or some symbol of peace, along the "pathway to peace" which led to the towering 70-feet high national tree.
The big tree belongs to every American. Each year, a different state donates it; and this year it was presented by the people of Oregon. Although the Pageant of Peace is only seven years old, the custom of lighting a national tree dates back to 1924, when President Calvin Coolidge walked to the south lawn of the White House to light a tree from Vermont, the state of his birth.
The lighting was one of the last official acts of President Eisenhower's eight-year Administration. The Pageant embraces services, concerts, choral singing and religious drama. It closes Dec 31.
