Background: The United Nations has reaffirmed its stand on Rhodesian independence. On Wednesday (13 December), the General Assembly voted overwhelmingly in favour of a resolution condemning the Rhodesian government and certain Western countries who gave it support.

SYNOPSIS: Speaking in Spanish, General Assembly President, Hans Lievano, outlined the resolution before the final vote. It recognised the legitimacy of the struggle of the people of Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) for self-determination, freedom and independence and their right to secure independence by any means at their disposal. It also called for no independence before majority rule and condemned Prime Minister Ian Smith's government as an "illegal racist m???ority regime". The draft strongly condemned South Africa and certain Western countries for their direct and indirect support to the Rhodesian government and called on Britain to take all effective measures it could- as the administering power - to see that the majority rule was achieved. Britain should not, it added, accord the illegal regime any powers of sovereignty before that time. The voting in favour of the resolution was overwhelming.

The resolution board showed no less than 130 countries voting in favour of the resolution.

Eleven countries decided to abstain from the voting.

And that is how the votes were recorded - 130 for, no votes against, and eleven abstentions.

Chairman Hans Lievano read out the results in Spanish, but they were as expected. So a world-wide embargo of South Africa...because she supplies Rhodesia...goes ahead and the United Nations totally rejects Rhodesia's internal settlement, worked out in March this year. All member states are also called on to refuse recognition to the internal settlement.
