Background: At Umvukwe, Southern Rhodesia, March 21, Africans and European settlers competed together in a ploughing contest. It was the first event of its kind to be held in the Federation, and one of the top prizes, presented by Federal Minister of Agriculture John Graylin, went to an African.

He received a silver challenge cup for the best performance in the Mounted-Disc. Plough Open Championship, becoming - it's claimed - the first African to win a ploughing contest in Africa against European competition.

The Occasion was an interesting example of racial co-operation in a continent torn by race problems, and in a country associated by many people with the white supremacy policies of South Africa.

Africans - whose farming methods are in many cases still very primitive - showed they were equally as capable of mastering modern techniques as their white neighbours.
