Speaking to party workers at Huddersfield on Saturday afternoon (30 October), Mr. Harold Wilson... Britain's?

  • Description

    CU Wilson speaking

TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 1: MR. WILSON: "One thing must be made clear. No Labour Member of Parliament can vote for any legislation consequential on Thursday's vote. (APPLAUSE). No Labour Member of Parliament can abstain on any legislation consequential on Thursday's vote, (APPLAUSE)..... for to vote on any aspect of Tory legislation on the Common Market, on any procedural device to prevent the will of the British people from being mis-represented by the votes of the House of Commons .... to vote for any legislation authorising the government to promulgate rules by statutory order affecting the social and economic security of our people, is to vote to keep this Conservative Government in office. They could not, with any sense of integrity, justify a vote which will enable Mr. Heath to continue to inflict upon the nation the policies which have injured our people over the past year... their living standards and their social welfare... injured too, the economic security of the millions of families whose rights it is the duty of the Parliamentary Labour Party to defend."

Background: Speaking to party workers at Huddersfield on Saturday afternoon (30 October), Mr. Harold Wilson... Britain's Opposition leader... issued a stern warning to Labour Members of Parliament. He made it clear that Labour members who voted in favour of Britain's entry into the Common Market last Thursday (28 October) must now toe the party line, and vote against the Government legislation which would complete Britain's entry procedures. Mr. Wilson told the meeting that Thursday's vote was not the end, but rather a beginning, and that Mr. Heath, the Prime Minister, would now have to face the reality of a Parliamentary battle.

Editors should not that this telerecorded mono coverage starts from first frame with Mr. Wilson's speech, and therefore a pre-announcement will be necessary.
