Background: The Soviet Union has selected its swimming squad for the Moscow Olympics after four days of trials in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev. The Soviet swimmers have high hopes of producing their best-ever performances at an Olympics following the withdrawal of the Americans, who have dominated the sport in recent years. It was the first time that the Soviet swimming trials have been held in Kiev.

SYNOPSIS: The city will feature in the Olympics, but in another sport -- foot ball. Group A of the soccer tournament will be played in Kiev's Central Stadium, which has a capacity of 100,000. The stadium has been largely rebuilt. A new floodlighting system has been installed and electronic scoreboards have also been introduced.

But last weekend it was the swimmers who attracted most attention in Kiev. And the start of the trials was Sergei Koplyakov, a student from Minsk.

Koplyakov outclassed the other contenders in the men's 100 metres freestyle. He once held the world record in this event. The first three in each race qualified for the Olympic team and the results pleased the chief Soviet swimming coach, Sergei Vaitseckovsky. He admits that the absence of the American swimmers will make things easier for this team. Vaitseckovsky believes that the Soviet Union and East Germany will now dominate most events at the Palace of Aquatic Sports in Moscow. But he still thinks the competition will be "hard and Persistent". However, Soviet swimmers at present hold eight world and eight European records, and there were several outstanding references at the Kiev trials. the most impressive came from Koplyakov.

His time of 51.49 seconds was just outside the world record.
