    Background: TAIPEI, TAIWAN

It was an Indonesian who won the men's two hundred metre race at the 1984 International Invitational Athletic Meet at the Taipei Municipal Stadium on September 9. Purnomo, who made it as far as the semi-finals in the 100 metre even in the Los Angeles Olympics, won with a time of 20.98. The U.S. team captured the majority of the medals, winning 15 gold, 12 silver and 9 bronze. John Brenner from the U.S. took the gold medal in the shot put, with a throw of 21.12 metres. That performance would have given him the silver medal in the Olympics, but he failed to qualify for the U.S. team. Brent Harken of the U.S. won the men's high jump with a leap of 2.29 metres. The Republic of China, the host team, came second overall, winning 2 gold, 8 silver and 17 bronze medals. Japan, which sent a delegation for the first time in five years, won 2 gold, 7 silver and two bronze medals.
