Background: France is pledged to contribute to Chad's economic recovery, the French Minister of Co-operation, M. Christian Nucci said at the start of a 24-hour visit to the Chadian capital N'Djamena. During the visit he had talks with President Hissene Habre. The French minister was greeted at the airport by Foreign Minister Idriss Miskine and other government officials. He later inaugurated a major road project by digging the first sod of what is to become Chad's main north-south highway. The project, costing about five hundred million Francs CFA (13 1/2 million Us dollars) is being entirely financed by the french government Other aid totalling 13 hundred million Francs CFA (35 million dollars) will help the former French colony attain financial, administrative and economic self-sufficiency.
