Background: The Nigerian Green Eagles, warming up for the African Nations Cup at the end of the month, managed a one-all draw against Kenya sat Nairobi's City Stadium on Sunday, 8 February.

Neither side played impressively. Kenya had the excuse of having only a week's training before the match. And Nigerian coach, Ray Armstrong said later that Nairobi's altitude affected his team in the first half.

The Nigerians said on arrival in Nairobi on Wednesday, 4 February, that they wanted to acclimatise to playing at high altitude in preparation for the final rounds of the Cup of Nations in Addis Ababa later this month.

Kenya, despite its lack of preparation, dominated the first half of the game. But the home team still only managed to score one goal, when forward Binzi Mwakolo put the ball past Nigerian goalie Eric.

The Nigerians must have become used to playing in the rarefied air by half time, and took control of the game in the second half.

They equalised 12 minutes from the end when inside left Thomson Usieyan took a corner kick which was headed into the net by outside right Baba Out.

SYNOPSIS: The Nigerian National team the Green Eagles played a friendly international against the Kenyan National side at Nairobi's city stadium on Sunday. The match was part of the Eagles's preparations for the African Nations cup final rounds in Ethiopia later this month--and the Nigerians, in the light shirts, wanted to use this game in Nairobi to help adjust to playing at high altitude. The altitude in fact appeared to have some effect on their game for the Kenyans completely dominated the first half played in front of a big crowd.

But the Kenyan side who had trained together for only a week before the game were not able to capitalise on the Nigerians' ill ease.

Neither side seemed to be able to keep possession long enough to build up really dangerous moves. The Kenyan attack appeared a little disjointed and as they were doing most of the pressing there were few chances in the first half and only one goal, after twenty-five minutes.

The goal came when a fine through ball pierced the Nigerian defence and came to Kenyan striker Binzi Mwakolo.

But the visitors must have acclimatised to the rarefied air by half time. They appeared a far livelier side in the second half. The Kenyan defence had more difficulty keeping a hold on the Nigerian forwards and Baba Out's header was a sign of things to come.

The Nigerians' equaliser came ten minutes from the end--another header by Otu. So the game gave the Nigerians valuable practice at a higher altitude and a creditable one-all draw.
