Background: THE THREE-WEEK LONG EXCHANGE PROGRAMME INVOLVING BRITISH AND GHANAIAN TROOPS ENDED LAST WEDNESDAY (9 OCTOBER) WITH A MILITARY EXERCISE NEAR KPONG.

THE EXERCISE, CODE-NAMED "DOUBLE-DEAL", INVOLVED TROOPS OF THE WELCH REGIMENT AND ELEMENTS OF THE GHANAIAN ARMY.

THE BRITISH TROOPS TAKING PART IN THE EXERCISE REPRESENTED AN ATTACKING FORCE WHICH HAD INVADED GHANA AND HAD OCCUPIED PART OF THE COUNTRY. THE MISSION OF THE GHANAIANS WAS TO DISLODGE THE BRITISH AND RETAKE THE "OCCUPIED" TERRITORY.

THE COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF BRITAIN'S ARMY STRATEGIC COMMAND, LIEUTENANT-GENERAL SIR JOHN MOGG, VISITED THE MOCK BATTLE-FIELD. THE COMMANDER OF THE GHANAIAN ARMY, MAJOR-GENERAL OCRAN, WAS ALSO AT THE EXERCISE.

THE GHANAIAN TROOPS WERE BRIEFED BY THEIR OFFICERS BEFORE THEY LAUNCHED AN ATTACK UPON THE BRITISH, SOME OF WHOM WERE WAITING IN DUG-OUTS.

THE BRITISH TROOPS FINALLY WITHDREW FROM THEIR POSITIONS UNDER THE COVER OF A SMOKE SCREEN AS THE GHANAIANS MOVED IN.

LT.-GENERAL MOGG LEFT ACCRA TODAY (FRIDAY) AFTER A FOUR-DAY INSPECTION TOUR OF THE JOINT BRITISH-GHANAIAN EXERCISES.

HE TOLD REPORTERS AT THE AIRPORT THAT HE HAD HELD WORTHWHILE DISCUSSIONS WITH GHANA'S HEAD OF STATE, GENERAL J.A. ANKRAH, DURING HIS VISIT.

LT.-GENERAL MOGG SAID HE WOULD RECOMMEND TO THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT A REGULAR TROOP EXCHANGE BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES, ADDING THAT THE WELCH REGIMENT HAD BENEFITED ENORMOUSLY FROM ITS TRAINING WITH THEIR GHANAIAN COUNTERPARTS IN THE THICK JUNGLE AND SAVANNAH COUNTRY OF GHANA.

AS PART OF THE MILITARY EXCHANGE, 300 GHANAIAN TROOPS HAVE BEEN TRAINING WITH THE SOUTH WALES BORDERERS AND THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT IN BRITAIN.
