    Background: MONZA, MILAN, ITALY

Turbo-charged Porsche 956s took the top seven places at Monza, Italy on April 10 in the 1,000 kilometre race which opened the 1983 World Endurance Championship. The Porsche works team, defending its world championship title, faced a strong challenge from Lancia, which took pole position after practice. However, it was a privately entered Porsche, driven by Bob Wollek, which took the lead as the Lancia challenge faded. At the finish of the race Wollek's Porsche crossed the line 73 seconds ahead of Jackie Ickx, leading the Porsche works team, with five other Porsches coming up behind.
