Background: SHEIKH ABDUL-HAMID SAYEH, FORMERLY HEAD OF JUDGES AND MINISTER OF HOLY PLACES, AND MR. ROUHI AL-KHATIB, FORMER MAYOR OF JERUSALEM AND HEAD OF THE SAVE JERUSALEM COMMITTEE, BOTH OF WHOM WERE EXPELLED BY THE ISRAELIS FROM THE OCCUPIED TERRITORY, YESTERDAY (AUGUST 24) CALLED A PRESS CONFERENCE IN AMMAN, JORDAN, AT WHICH THEY ACCUSED ISRAEL OF COMPLICITY IN THE DESTRUCTION OF THE EL-AQSA MOSQUE IN JERUSALEM, PART OF WHICH WAS BURNED OUT ON THURSDAY (AUGUST 21).

TENSION AND ANTI-ISRAELI FEELING AMONG ARABS HAVE REACHED THEIR HIGHEST POINT SINCE THE 1967 SIX-DAY WAR WITH THE BURNING OF THE 500-YEAR-OLD MOSQUE, WHICH, AFTER THOSE IN MECCA AND MEDINA, IS THE THIRD MOST SACRED CENTRE IN ISLAM. A YOUNG AUSTRALIAN TOURIST HAS BEEN REMANDED IN CUSTODY BY THE ISRAELIS ON A CHARGE OF SETTING FIRE TO THE MOSQUE, WHICH WAS BUILT ON THE SITE WHERE CALIPH OMAR PRAYED AFTER CAPTURING JERUSALEM IN AD 636.

AT A PRESS CONFERENCE, JOURNALISTS WERE SHOWN A PICTURE OF THE PROPOSED ISRAELI SOLOMON TEMPLE, WHICH SHEIKH SAYEH AND MR. AL-KHATIB ALLEGED WAS TO BE BUILT ON THE SITE OF THE EL-AQSA MOSQUE. SHEIKH SAYEH CALLED THE BURNING OF THE MOSQUE AN 'INDESCRIBABLE ISRAELI CRIME, BRUTE IN ITS BARBARITY AND INTENSE IN ITS HIDEOUSNESS'. THE 'CRIME', HE ADDED, HAD MOST PROFOUNDLY SHOCKED MILLIONS OF MOSLEMS AND ARABS AND PEOPLE OF CONSCIENCE IN ALL PARTS OF THE WORLD.
