Background: Istanbul saw a day of bloody clashes between rival student groups which resulted in the death of one Turkish student on Thursday (24 April). Several policemen and civilians were also injured.
The state-owned Turkish Radio reported that at one stage, several journalists trying to cover street fighting were attacked by angry crowds and some were injured. It said 200 people had been detained.
It also said fighting started when leftwing and rightwing groups clashed over whether Istanbul Science University should be closed down. In the ensuing Gunfight, one student was killed.
Police stopped the fighting after breaking into student hostels to seize a haul of molotov cocktails and weapons.
A group of students later roamed through the streets of Istanbul carrying placard which Turkish Radio said were protesting against the government of Prime Minister Suleyman Demirel who returned to power just over three weeks ago.
