Background: There is still more than four months to go before election time in Venezuela, but already the campaigns of the major candidates have moved into the streets. On Tuesday (25 July) supporters of the Social Christian Party candidate, Senor Luis Herrera Campins, held a massive demonstration in the main square of the country's capital, Caracas.

SYNOPSIS: The campaign supporting Senor Herrera Campins, has been gathering momentum over the past few months with party followers doing their best to spread the name of their candidate to all parts of the country.

When the time came for Senor Herrera Campins to officially register as a presidential candidate earlier this week his supporters decide to put on a show of strength with a colourful mass rally and parade through the streets, of Caracas.

A long term party member and popular personality, Senor Herrera Campins is expected to put up the strongest challenge to the present election favourite, Senor Luis Pinerua Ordaz of the ruling Democratic Action Party. Recently Herrera Campins' prospects were improved when he gained the backing of the smaller Democratic Republican Union Party, headed by Senor Jovito Villalba. Its party supporters joined the festivity of Tuesday's rally.

On their way to the electoral office for the registration ceremony, supporters waved the party colours and chanted slogans and policies being used by Herrera Campins in his campaign. His election platform offers a comprehensive public works programme, needed he says, to counter the problems experienced by the current government headed by President Carlos Andres Perez. Senor Herrera Campins has attacked the present regime on a number of issues - including severe water shortages in the capital and other major cities; power shortages, and a lack of basic foods.

Although handicapped by a party with almost half of the active members of his main rival, Senor Herrera Campins is hoping his policies will appeal to the many new voters among the six million Venezuelans who will go to the polls in December.
