Background: INTRODUCTION: Military exercises involving 100,000 troops from seven North Atlantic Treaty Organization countries have been continuing in Europe. Air, sea and land forces were involved in the latest maneouvers, called Determination 81, near Izmir in Turkey.
SYNOPSIS: The NATO exercise began in September and are due to end in December. Off the coast of Turkey, in the Aegean Sea, ships staged a mock attack on 'enemy' troops in Doganbey Bay.
As American air force planes flew overhead, in advance of an amphibious attack on the bay, mines were exploded on the beach by opposition forces to try to prevent the landing.
Troops from nations including Italy, France, Portugal and Britain took part in the exercise. A number of air accidents have marred the manoeuvre, the worst of which resulted in 35 deaths when a Turkish military plane crashed on September 22nd.
The NATO landing exercise involved waves of amphibious vehicles and transport helicopters used to carry the invading forces ashore. 'Determination 81' went smoothly, according to officials, without any further casualties. The death toll during the manoeuvres, in Turkey alone, rose to 37 on September 23rd. A Turkish F-4 Phantom jet crashed on the northern coast of the Sea of Marmara, killing its two pilots.
In addition to the exercises around the coast of Turkey, NATO troops have been taking part in manoeuvres in many other parts of Europe.
Some of the biggest exercises have been in West Germany, but others have been staged in Norway, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
