Background: About 7,000 anti-nuclear demonstrators tried, but failed on December 4, to form a 15 kilometre (9 mile) human chain to a NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) missile base. The Italian Communist Party and pacifist groups had aimed to form the chain between Catania and Sigonella, the NATO airbase, where components for Italy's designated batch of 112 Cruise missiles started arriving in late November. But police said protestors fell far short of covering the whole distance. Speakers from trade unions and left-wing parties stressed they were demanding the elimination of both Warsaw Pact and NATO medium-range nuclear missiles. Placards in a rain-soaked square said the 1945 atomic bomb explosion in Hiroshima, Japan, must never be repeated at Comiso, the Sicilian airbase designated as the permanent site of the 112 missiles. During the peaceful demonstration, balloons were much in evidence in the symbolic yellow colour.
